• CAPSTONE

WHEN YOU LEAVE JHS AND JAGS, WHAT WILL BE YOUR CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT?

HOW WILL YOUR LIFE EXPERIENCES AND EDUCATION HELP CHANGE YOU AND THE WORLD, PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY?

WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THE TABLE AS AN ADULT?

    THE PURPOSE:
The goal of the JAGS Senior Capstone Project is to integrate the knowledge, skills and concepts you’ve learned throughout life into one culminating project, that is experience and researched based, solves or addresses a problem (locally or globally) and focuses on your growth as a global citizen. Projects can include service to others, self discovery through personal in-depth exploration of a research topic, the building of a system or product design OR improving upon it, (EX: Making the JAGS MUN program better:) planning, organizing and completing an event, activity, service learning project, volunteering or internship, etc. Really, WHAT your Capstone project will become is completely up to you - okay, with a little guidance from your teachers, but this is YOUR creation! Enjoy your freedom to choose!

    THE PROCESS:
    • Choose a topic in which you are truly interested! Choose a topic of great interest to you because you WANT to learn! You should not choose a topic you have extensive experience with or one for which you would consider yourself an expert. Your topic choice should reflect a significant LEARNING and GROWTH.
    • Choose a topic specific enough to be unique, but broad enough to be reasonable. Don’t get discouraged! Dare to dream!
    • Choose a topic that is both creatively and academically challenging.
    • Choose a topic that is within your financial means to complete.
    • Choose a topic that does not pose a danger to you or others.
    • Choose a topic for which you will be able to conduct first hand interviews of experts as primary sources. Keep in mind that local experts are easier to interview within our time limitations. Approach potential community mentors personally! Maintain contact with your mentor!
    • Choose a topic that is well suited for development of a product or service and an effective presentation.
    • Choose a topic that is school appropriate. All aspects of your project must be appropriate and professional.

    The project must:
-produce tangible evidence of their work
-with something physical that can be seen or touched (research based)
-a career/community-based service that can be documented as beneficial OR
-something that can be written, produced, taped, or presented
-connect to a STAFF MEMBER here in the JLS AND an ADULT in the community (please, not a parent - try to go beyond people in your household) with whom you are working

The two most critical factors in the Senior Capstone are:
What is the problem to be solved? (This is your Capstone Driving Question)
What tangible outcomes will constitute success?

  • The following Senior Capstone ideas have been generated by the JAGS Class of 2020. Please, feel free to contact these students with ideas and suggestions.

    Go Green Club

Your Driving Question OR what you are claiming to solve with your Capstone.
How can I organize and plan to contribute to the betterment of the community and school
through Go Green Club, while getting others involved and stepping out of my own comfort zone
    and becoming a leader?
What Sustainable Development Goal are you connecting your Capstone to, and why?
I am connecting my Capstone to goal twelve--ensuring sustainable consumption and
production patterns. This goal deals with reducing the world’s waste production and
improve efficiency so waste and material consumption does not contribute to
environmental degradation. The goal’s objectives include utilizing recycling, reducing,
and reusing to lessen waste generation. These objectives directly align with the purpose
of Go Green Club. Through Go Green Club, I, and hopefully others, will be promoting an
easy way to make a difference in the environmental sustainability of our community.
What is the ultimate goal for your Capstone?
First, to encourage others to get involved in a club that promotes environmental change
in a small yet meaningful way. While doing this, I want to push myself out of my shell and
become a leader to foster these ideas in underclassmen as well. I hope my ideas can
continue and that Go Green Club remains intact after I graduate.
The names of your two mentors AND their qualifications/warrants that make them an expert
mentor for your Capstone. Your parents/family members cannot be your mentors. You need one
JLS employee and another expert as a mentor (can be any adult who is an expert in your
    Capstone area).
EX: Ms. Ryann Despot, JHS Teacher, Advisor of the Film Club (you
chose her because you are making a documentary film about water sustainability in conflict
zones) AND Mr. Marc Morgan, Superintendent, Water Reclamation Facility for the City of
Canton, Ohio.***FYI: You will be turning in a mini-bio on your two mentors for the 2nd Quarter.
    1. Mr. Sam Childers, JHS Staff, current advisor of Go Green Club--an obvious
choice as my mentor since I hope to revive and sustain the club.
What key points will you be researching (1st Semester) to support your Capstone? A concise
bulleted list explaining your research goals and points will suffice.
    ● The benefits of recycling and how it can help our school,
    ● The best way to get people involved and connected in recycling and
    environmental sustainability,
    ● What it takes to start and maintain a club
    ● What really can and cannot be recycled and why
    ● Impacts of not having recycling
    ● What is recycling and how is it done correctly?
    ● How has recycling impacted the environment
    ● What else we can do to improve and encourage reduction of waste
What is your Capstone’s ‘Take Action’ component? This is what you will produce at the end of
    the 2nd semester, usually.
    2. Revitalize and sustain Go Green Club. I hope to start this before the
second semester, though, and maintain it throughout this time. I hope to
get underclassmen involved in this and help sustain it beyond my
    graduation.
How will you be sharing your Capstone work with others? Much like #6, your research and
Capstone should not live in a vacuum. Share your insight with others. An opportunity has come
our way at JMMS - they are looking to build an afterschool connection @ JMMS that unites the
JAGS and Interact/Rotary values with younger students. Think back to your Freshmen ‘COGO’
project, imagine sharing that information w/ a tie in to service/service project with our middle
schoolers. Is your Capstone project something you could take to JMMS?
    3. Go Green Club will have open membership, and to come whenever one
feels interested. I hope to encourage younger JAGS members and the
entire student body to help with the club. This could definitely be extended
to the middle school for its own chapter there to promote recycling among
    the middle school student body.
Where and how do you need help with your Capstone? Do you need a second mentor? Do
you need help getting started? Do you need help with a drive or collection? All you gotta do is
ask, my peoples - that is why I am making the information you give me public! Once this
assignment goes live, it will be on our JAGS/JHS webpage - you’d be surprised who looks at it!
    4. I would LOVE to get the word out and encourage students to help with the
club. Sustaining a club like this is hard to pull of with just myself since I
don’t always have the time to stay after school to do it on my own. Fliers
on as I write this, but I definitely need to know who
    could be interested.
    5. Additionally, I am looking for a second mentor that is qualified to assist me
    with recycling!
    6.
Anything else we would need to know about your project ideas, goals, etc.
    7. Any student can help with Go Green Club any time once it gets up and
running. I would offer an hour of service every day to those who show up
    once that time comes!

    Human Trafficking/Self-Defense

Your Driving Question OR what you are claiming to solve with your Capstone.
How can I equip people with better knowledge on human trafficking and personal safety/self-defense skills?
What Sustainable Development Goal are you connecting your Capstone to, and why?
Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being - Teach self-defense so people can protect their well-being.
Goal 4: Quality Education - Educate myself and others on human trafficking.
What is the ultimate goal for your Capstone?
To create better informed students who have the means and knowledge to defend themselves and keep themselves safe.
The names of your two mentors AND their qualifications/warrants that make them an expert mentor for your Capstone. Your parents/family members cannot be your mentors. You need one JLS employee and another expert as a mentor (can be any adult who is an expert in your Capstone area).

I have emailed Mr. Stanley about being my mentor.
What key points will you be researching (1st Semester) to support your Capstone? A concise bulleted list explaining your research goals and points will suffice.
Human trafficking research on: vitctims, signs someone is being trafficked, resources, prevention
What is your Capstone’s ‘Take Action’ component? This is what you will produce at the end of the 2nd semester, usually.
I would like to create an opportunity to teach people about self-defense and other ways to keep themselves safe.
How will you be sharing your Capstone work with others? Much like #6, your research and Capstone should not live in a vacuum. Share your insight with others. An opportunity has come our way at JMMS - they are looking to build an afterschool connection @ JMMS that unites the JAGS and Interact/Rotary values with younger students. Think back to your Freshmen ‘COGO’ project, imagine sharing that information w/ a tie in to service/service project with our middle schoolers. Is your Capstone project something you could take to JMMS?
I would like to get involved with the 7th period JAGS MUN class and their human trafficking focus. Later in the year I would like to organize some kind of event to give anyone interested the opportunity to learn self-defense and ways to keep themselves safe.
Where and how do you need help with your Capstone? Do you need a second mentor? Do you need help getting started? Do you need help with a drive or collection? All you gotta do is ask, my peoples - that is why I am making the information you give me public! Once this assignment goes live, it will be on our JAGS/JHS webpage - you’d be surprised who looks at it!
I am in need of a second mentor.

Implementing Water Bottle Station into Jackson High School

    1. Through my Capstone, I plan to raise money in order to install water bottle refilling
stations throughout Jackson High School. With this installation, my partner, Sam, and I
hope to reduce the use of plastic water bottles and begin a trend of using reusable ones by
making refilling water bottles easy and fast.
    2. I am connecting my Capstone to Sustainable Development Goal 12, “Ensure sustainable
consumption and production patterns” because this goal focuses on material consumption
and reducing our footprint on the environment. This connects directly to the water bottle
stations I am working to install because they will reduce the consumption of plastic in the
    high school.
    3. The ultimate goal of our Capstone is to encourage others to reduce their use of plastic
water bottles and overall learn to do their part to take care of the Earth. By selling
reusable water bottles, we first hope to implement the idea of recycling the same water
bottle, instead of opening a new plastic water bottle every time. Then, by adding these
stations we hope all students in Jackson High School eventually begin to reuse water
    bottles.
    4. Our first mentor for our Capstone is Mr. Preston, who is a teacher at Jackson High
School. Mr. Preston has already been putting forth work to raise money for these stations
and hope to work with Sam and I in order to raise enough money to make our Capstone
possible. As well, our expert mentor is Mr. Hampshire. Mr. Hampshire works for the
company in which we hope to create and buy the water bottles we are going to sell. Both
mentors are already working with us and hope to help us take steps in order to improve
    our community.
    5. During the first quarter, we hope to research for our Capstone and begin to consolidate a
    plan by:
    - Meeting with our mentors and discussing a thorough plan to begin action
    - Working to apply for a grant in order to help pay for the production of water
bottles and the water bottle stations
    - Creating water bottles and planning ways to sell them and involve JAGS in the
    sales
    - Researching more about the installment of the water bottle stations and the cost
    behind this
    6. By the end of the second quarter, we hope to have taken action my raising the $600
needed for the station through our fundraising and planning. At this point, we plan to be
in the process of installing a water bottle station and spreading the awareness of our
Capstone and the importance of using the station.
    7. Our main approach for sharing our Capstone work with others will be the fundraising we
do through selling water bottles. We hope to raise awareness of the importance of using
the stations and encourage all students throughout the school as we raise money. We
would also like to incorporate all JAGS students through our fundraiser by working with
them at events such as Go Night and spreading awareness to them as well. If we are able
to raise enough money, or possibly begin a further program, it would be wonderful to
even move to the middle school and possible begin the efforts of installing water bottle
    stations in JMMS.
    8. Overall the largest aspects we need help with are the beginning of our Capstone and
setting up everything to ensure that our fundraisers and applying for the grant we hope to
get for the stations works out smoothly. However, we are already beginning to work with
Mr. Preston to lift off both the grant and the creation of water bottles to sell. In the future,
I’m sure our biggest issue will be figuring out costs and incorporating JAGS in our
Capstone, but overall I think we are on a very good track and should be able to receive
the help we need in order to make our project successful.

    Ethics of Counter-Insurgency Operations

    1. How have military ethics towards civilians impacted the effectiveness of
American military operations during the War in Afghanistan(2001-)?
What Sustainable Development Goal are you connecting your Capstone to, and why?
    2. The Sustainable Development Goal the best fits the purpose of my
Capstone research paper is Goal 16: Peace,Justice and Strong Institutions.
The topic of my research pertains to any military force (in this case the
United States and Coalition forces) ability to ethically carryout operations
against non-state actors and asymmetric warfare, therefore it directly
relates to the goal’s parameters within a region. Specifically, the objective
of counter-insurgency operations is to not only obtain peace through
combat but also by way of establishing local government and
infrastructure. These objectives are nearly identical to those described in
the goal and while one wouldn’t initially think of using “violence” to
obtain peace, forces such as the UN Peacekeepers prove the necessity.
What is the ultimate goal for your Capstone?
    3. The goal in completing my research and answering the research question,
“How have military ethics towards civilians impacted the effectiveness of
American military operations during the War in Afghanistan(2001-)?”, is to
establish the relationship between military forces and civilians within a
counter-insurgency environment and describe how they impact one
another. Furthermore, I hope my research can be used in the future to
further define the appropriate military ethics involved in obtaining the
    goals detailed in SDG 17.
    4. JLS Employee: Mrs. Carly Barnes, JHS Teacher, Advisor of AP Research
Expert: Maj.Gen.(Ret.) Dan Hahn, Former Deputy Commanding General,
Multi-National Corps, Iraq/Afganistan ;Assistant Deputy Director for
    combating terrorism at the Pentagon.
What key points will you be researching (1st Semester) to support your Capstone? A concise
bulleted list explaining your research goals and points will suffice.
    5.
    ● The Ethics of Counterinsurgency - Overall ethical implications and objectives of
operations pertaining to the combat of insurgency forces
    ● Ethical Considerations of Combat - Moral Conduct within the Insurgent
    Battlespace
    ● Rules of Engagement - Guidelines of military forces in deciding
appropriate situations to engage possible threats
    ● Modern Interrogation Methods - Ethics of modern interrogation and the
impact they have on obtaining information and carrying out operations
    ● Military-Civilian Interactions - Guidelines and Practical implications of
this crucial relationship within the environment of an insurgency
    ● Coalition Non-Combat Commitments - Economic and Political objectives
    within counterinsurgency efforts
    6. The “Take Action: component of my Capstone consists of the process to design,
plan, and conduct a year-long research based investigation to address my research
question. The research will be completed with an academic paper on the topic, as
well as a presentation and oral defense of my research.
    7. Unfortunately, I feel that the topic of my research may not fit well into a program designed to
introduce the values of JAGS with younger students. However, I do believe that the academic
paper I produce can serve as a great example to all future and current JAGS students on the depth
of global issues and their possible solutions. Moreover, both the method of research used and my
topic itself have similarities to the global studies carried out by Freshman, Sophomore, and
Model UN JAGS students during their high school careers.
    8. I don’t yet require any further assistance in my research process as I am still in the early stages
of acquiring sources and establishing a research method. The most difficult aspect of my
research for the next couple months in making sure that I appropriately gather and cite
information to use within my academic paper. Luckily, I will have daily access to one of my
mentors through the actual AP Research class, allowing for constant opportunities to progress my
    Capstone project.
    9. No :)

    Jackson-Swag

    1. Through this capstone I aspire to change the visual reputation of the JAGS Academy via
apparel design, while supporting an environmental organization, 4Ocean, with the profits
    I earn from sales.
    2. Within this capstone I plan on connecting Goal 6, clean water and sanitation, as well as
Goal 14, life below water. I plan on making this connection through the donations of my
profits; you see, I would like to focus my attention towards an environmental
organization that has a direct impact with our oceans, the organization 4Ocean isa prime
example and the association that I want to support.
    3. The ultimate goal for my capstone is for the JAGS community to be able to purchase
“swag” that embodies who they are, as well as who the academy is. I would also like to
be able to donate a substantial amount of coin to the organization, 4Ocean, which will
hopefully subsidise the direct help I am unable to provide. Not to mention, I want to
inspire those who are nervous about pursuing something that they are passionate about,
    for me that is clothing.
    4. -Mr. George Preston, JHS/JAGS teacher. Mr. Preston is an environmentally friendly
person which will help me during the process of narrowing down which organization(s) I
should support. Additionally, he and I are very close, as he is one of my wrestling
coaches, which makes me believe that he will keep me on pace throughout this
    assignment.
-Mr. Marc Rice, Founder of Atlantica Apparel. Marc is a friend of mine who started his
on apparel company, making me believe that he is the perfect candidate for my second
mentor. I plan on receiving insight on how he designs his clothing, his production
process, and how he distributes his apparel.
    5. -Design Programs: I plan on focusing my attention towards different programs for
displaying my design. Through these different program(s) I hope to get a better visual of
how the finished products will look, which will help me receive feedback from my fellow
    Jaggers.
-Clothing Companies/Producers: I want to also focus my research on different companies
that will help produce the apparel, ultimately deciphering which retailer is the best
    financially as well as aesthetically.
-4Ocean/Different Non-Profit Organizations: Finally, I want to explore 4Ocean and
different non-profit organizations to see which one will make the most impact with the
donations they receive from me. Essentially, how these organizations handle the money
    that is donated to them.
    6. My “Take Action” portion of this assignment is going to be the distribution and sales of
my apparel. I want to center my attention on getting the word out, so anyone/everyone
who wants to rep JAGS’s Swag is able to. The quicker I can get orders for the apparel the
faster Jaggers will be able to wear their new gear, inturn, the more profits I will be able to
    gather and then donate.
    7. I believe that this project will speak for itself; obviously I will be able to talk about it
through sales-work (persuading those to buy our merch), but I believe that the best way
this capstone will be represented is through the consumers that wear the product out in
    the community.
    8. I think that the biggest way I will be able to receive help is to get the word out once I
have finalized the products. Additionally, I will be turning to others for feedback on how
    the clothing looks.
    9. I want to keep my designs simple, I believe that the best way to get people interested in
buying clothing is to have designs that everyone can relate to and appreciate. Also, I was
under the impression that our Jackson mentor didn’t have to be an expert on our capstone
per-say, so if I need to change my first mentor I will accordingly, I just thought he would
keep me on track throughout the year, especially during the struggles of wrestling season.

Reading for Fun: A Book Club at Jackson High School

For my Capstone I tried my hand at stemming the declining rate at which kids are reading. And
drawing inspiration from the UN’s fourth sustainable development goal, Quality Education, I’m confident
in my ability to do so. To begin, I believe, as most of us hopefully do, that reading is an essential skill for
producing conscientious members of society. Now to be clear, this project isn’t currently revolving
around literacy, that’s not really the problem I’m trying to tackle here, nor would I consider myself
qualified. The true problem lies in the number of kids actually sitting down now and then to read.
In our student lives great pieces of literary merit are dissected down to the most minute of details
and while this in its own right isn’t necessarily a bad thing, when a young highschool-aged kid is sat
down and forced to analyze something they have little to no interest in, it will obviously become a chore.
This is what literature has come to represent in the majority of our lives. Just this previous year I can
recall reading Wuthering Heights, a fantastic tale of triumph, tragedy, and romance. In class I absolutely
detested it. I remember it being so far removed from my realm of enjoyment that every second reading
felt almost stereotypically like an eternity. It was only once I revisited it over the summer that I was truly
able to appreciate the wonderful work it was. Now to those individuals who’ll blame teachers or the
books themselves for a shoddy experience, I’d invite you to re-read any book you didn’t happen to enjoy
(And maybe stop in to the Book Club I’m about to mention).
What I hope to accomplish is simple, to create an environment in which kids are able to discover a
passion for reading and I think a school book club may just be the perfect way to do that. So that’s just
what we did. Now I’m not doing this alone, alongside a cofounder who shares my goal, I also have the
well appreciated assistance of two mentors here at jackson. Mr. Matthew GIllette, a respected Language
Arts teacher and member of the JAGS community. With him I’m hoping not only to gain a better
understanding of structure, but also for introducing books themselves. I also have Mrs. Christina Conti, a
librarian here and someone with an avid knowledge of teaching youths the benefits and gratification of
    reading.
As mentioned above a significant amount of knowledge is required to accomplish our goal. Over
the course of the year I hope to learn much more about:
    • Teaching students,
    • Helping them adopt reading as a hobby,
    • The specific benefits a life of literature awards,
    • How to run an effective and efficient operation.
This will be quite a bit of hard work, but most of it has already been achieved. Earlier this month
we held an interest meeting for our club, aptly named “The Big Brain Book Bunch”, and received
an initial headcount of 28 students. This may seem small, but any amount of positive impact is
still moving forward and we’re quite happy with the following we’ve gained. As to future
partnership with the middle school we’re fully open to it and would love to open a branch down
there! This project was originally aimed at solidifying the commitment of young readers and
would integrate perfectly. We also hope to spread the word via social media and through physical
    posters throughout the school.
To close out I know we can’t do this alone. The help from our mentors is fantastic and greatly
appreciated, but I’d like to open the line to anyone else out there with advice or assistance. If you would
contact the email above, mabraccio1110@bearworks.jackson.sparcc.org, I’d love to hear from you and
would be receptive to any help provided. If you’d like to visit the club we meet every two Thursdays at
2:45 in N107. Our next meeting is the 19th and after that the 3rd of October. We’d love to have more
    students attend!

The Importance of Music in Education

    My Capstone
Your Driving Question OR what you are claiming to solve with your Capstone.
Why is it important to have music in one’s education and what are the long term effects of such an
    experience?
What Sustainable Development Goal are you connecting your Capstone to, and why?
Sustainable Development Goal number 4. Though one might argue that there are other subject matters of
more importance than music, I would tend to disagree. Music is universal. Every culture has some form
of music. Lots of cultures come together as a community using music, and I would find that the teaching
of music would be incredibly beneficial.
What is the ultimate goal for your Capstone?
I have always been told that music is important, but I have always wondered why. So my goal is to
research the specifics of the benefits and importance of music and ultimately share out my findings to
anyone who will listen to me. I think that it will be enlightening for myself and intriguing for others
The names of your two mentors AND their qualifications/warrants that make them an expert mentor for
your Capstone. Your parents/family members cannot be your mentors. You need one JLS employee and
another expert as a mentor (can be any adult who is an expert in your Capstone area).
    EX: Ms.
Ryann Despot, JHS Teacher, Advisor of the Film Club (you chose her because you are making a
documentary film about water sustainability in conflict zones) AND Mr. Marc Morgan, Superintendent,
Water Reclamation Facility for the City of Canton, Ohio.***FYI: You will be turning in a mini-bio on
your two mentors for the 2nd Quarter.
JLS employee: Mr. Stephen Neal, JHS Teacher, Percussion Director. Chosen for his knowledgeability on
    music education
Expert: Mrs. Michele Monigold, JHS Teacher, Director of Bands. Chosen for her knowledgeability on
    music education
What key points will you be researching (1st Semester) to support your Capstone? A concise bulleted list
explaining your research goals and points will suffice.
    • Basics for how music is learned on each continent (i.e. by rote, with sheet music, etc.)
    • IS music even taught in some places?
    • Does music affect childhood development?
    • Does music aid adults in any kind of way?
    • Is there a “best time” to start learning music.
What is your Capstone’s ‘Take Action’ component? This is what you will produce at the end of the 2nd
    semester, usually.
Using the information that I find to inform people of the potential benefits of music.
How will you be sharing your Capstone work with others? Much like #6, your research and Capstone
should not live in a vacuum. Share your insight with others. An opportunity has come our way at JMMS -
they are looking to build an afterschool connection @ JMMS that unites the JAGS and Interact/Rotary
values with younger students. Think back to your Freshmen ‘COGO’ project, imagine sharing that
information w/ a tie in to service/service project with our middle schoolers. Is your Capstone project
something you could take to JMMS?
People will not necessarily enjoy reading a long paper about the intricacies of music. I will see if I can
potentially share some info on various forms of music from around the world at various JAGS events. I
feel that people would find that more interesting. If there is someone interested, I could just share the
    paper with them.
Where and how do you need help with your Capstone? Do you need a second mentor? Do you need help
getting started? Do you need help with a drive or collection? All you gotta do is ask, my peoples - that is
why I am making the information you give me public! Once this assignment goes live, it will be on our
JAGS/JHS webpage - you’d be surprised who looks at it!
No, I don’t think I need help with much. Maybe a place to share my findings when I finish my paper.
Anything else we would need to know about your project ideas, goals, etc.
It’s like the slogan at Pellegrino Music Center. Making Music Makes you Smarter

rEcess Leader and Sensory Room In Jackson High School

For my capstone I am wanting to help kids who don’t know how to act or talk to
those who have disabilities. Also I feel that every school building in Jackson should have
a sensory room for the kids.
I am connecting sustainable development goal number 4, quality education. I feel
that in quality education learning you basic math, english, science and history are very
important along with how to communicate ideas with others is also very important. This
is something big that I have learned in JAGS the last 4 years and you should be able to
communicate with people might have a disability, or at least know how to talk to them.
The second part of my capstone I am connecting it to Development goal number 3 good
health and well being. A lot of kids at the high school need something like this for their
own health reasons. Many kids have a lot of stress or have a disability where they can
get overwhelmed very easy, especially in a school like Jackson with so many kids. This
is not good for their health, so I feel that having this room can really help those kids.
My mentors are Mrs. Ralls a guidance counselor as Jackson High School and
George White the leader of rEcess.
I will be researching what should go into a sensory room and how to set it up
along with how much it will cost and where it should go in the High school. I will also be
researching some different activities that can replicate what it’s like to have some of
    these disabilities.
My “take action” part of my capstone will be actually meeting with the Bored of
Special Education here in Jackson to discuss what will need to be done and the cost of
the sensory room along with where it will go in Jackson High School. I am also wanting
to come in to Ms. Stones 0 and 7th period MUN classes on a day that will work for both
her and I. I want to talk to the kids about people with disabilities and show them how to
talk to them and how to act around them.
I think that my capstone would be great for middle schoolers. The sooner they
learn about those kinds of people the sooner than can take action of their own. If I can
share rEcess to people in middle school I feel that by the time they would get to high
school they would be so into it and after I graduate someone else can take on the role
and it can keep going every year.
I feel that all I need for my capstone is support from others. I know I have the
support of JAGS, but I would love to try and get people to rEcess from outside of JAGS
and Jackson in general try and make it bigger. The more people there the better!
If you want to sign up for rEcess the link is here: www.recesshub.com and to
explain it a little, it is at First Christan Church of Canton and it is a place for parents of
disabled children to drop their kids off from 6-9 along with their siblings. It is supposed to
be a relaxing night for a parent because it is always nice to have a night to yourself.

    First Grade French

    1. The driving question of my capstone is along the lines of “Is it more beneficial to start
learning a second language at a younger age than is currently offered in local schools?”
    2. My capstone is focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education). With
my capstone I hope to globally enrich the education of young students and help inform
them on the world outside of Jackson Township.
    3. The ultimate goal of my capstone is not necessarily to teach these First Graders french,
but instead to make them away that there is more to the world than what they see
everyday. My goal is to expose them to another culture and be a catalyst on their journey
of becoming young, successful global citizens.
    4. Miss Lyndsey Krulock, JHS French Teacher and Mrs. Heather Shaffer, Sauder First
    Grade Teacher
    5. Research
    a. How the students absorb the material
    b. What parts of the lessons the students take most interest in
    c. Connections students make to their other classes through French
    6. My take action component that I will present at Go night will be encouraging parents to
get their children involved in learning a language at a younger age, whether that’s
duolingo, lessons that Spanish Club provides, or seeking other tutors.
    7. I could maybe do French tutoring at JHS to bridge our high school French program and
the middle school one. While in the classroom, I plan on taking many pictures and
documenting my experiences in order to share them at GO night.
    8. Right now, I have adequate help from my mentors, so I don’t think I need any extra help!
    9. In our meeting, I said this was going to be a weekly thing, but the principal of Sauder has
decided that making it a weekly occurrence would be spending too much time on
something that is not in the First Grade curriculum, but I plan on doing it once a month
    with Mrs. Shaffer’s Class.

    JAGS Student Leadership Board 19-20

    1. How can Colette and I facilitate a leadership board that changes JAGS for the better
through social/service event, community outreach, and use of technology?
    2. Sustainable Development Goal #4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and
promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. I chose this goal because it is exactly what
I hope to achieve through my joint capstone with Colette Jakubow. We hope to be able to
allow for local and international educational experiences for not only members of JAGS
but the members of our community. We hope to promote and celebrate diversity by
unifying people of different grades, ages and backgrounds. We hope to create lifelong
connections and instill values in students of the four pillars that they can carry with them
to their families now and into the future.
    3. The Ultimate Goal for my capstone is to create leadership opportunities for not only
members of JAGS but members of our community. Through this, I hope to extend the
reach of JAGS around the globe and serve various causes that myself and other
students are passionate about. Simply, I want to help people. Specifically, I want to use
my leadership experience to groom other leaders to do the same in the future.
    4. Ms. Rebecca after: JAGS Biology and Chemistry Teacher, Former Student Council
Advisor, Traveler, and accomplished leader with a diverse and intellectual perspective of
the world. She is overly qualified to be a mentor for this capstone as she is a staff
member of JAGS and holds its values. She works in close proximity with the JAGS
students and has a passion to see them succeed and change the world, same as Colette
    and I.
Mr. George Preston: JAGS Biology Teacher and Forensics Teacher, Wrestling Coach,
reliable Teacher Volunteer and an interesting useful perspective on fundraising and
sustainability. He is completely qualified for this mentor position as he really holds the
core values to JAGS to everything he does. Truly, he lives above the line. He also works
in close proximity with JAGS student and wishes them to succeed and change the world.
As a Freshman teacher, he also proves to be a great liaison between the upperclassmen
and underclassmen. Finally, with such a sustainable mindset, I can think of no one better
to mentor a capstone center around the sustainable development goals.
    5. I will be researching...
    1. What types of fundraisers are most effective for our type of organization?
    2. What topics are the General Population of JAGS passionate about?
    3. How can we move JAGS in a way that makes a financial difference in the
    community?
    4. What other kinds of organizations/academies are like our?
    1. What do they do differently than us?
    2. What do we have in common?
    5. How can I encourage underclassmen to come forward with their ideas?
    6. I would love to connect with as many people as possible with this capstone. I plan to use
both social media and face-to-face contact to connect with the community. Additionally, I
would love to involve the middle school in some way. I think that it would be beneficial to
invite them to GO Night and maybe have a few social events that they might attend. All in
all, I would like to publicize JAGS across the board. I really believe that when a student
joins JAGS, they bring their family and all of their community along with them.
    7. My ‘Take-Action’ part of my capstone is going to be the large group service projects that I
conduct and organize. Additionally, I plan to fundraise enough to be able to send as many
students on educational travel experiences as possible. If it is beneficial for one, it is
    beneficial for all.
    8. I am in constant need of volunteers for Service Projects and various community events.
While not all of them have set-in-stone dates, some specific ones would be the Haunted
Hayride event and the various Football Games that we will be facepaint and selling
blankets. I will mostly need help on November 6th. This Wednesday night is the date of
GO Night and it needs to be all hands on deck. I hope that anyone with the slightest
curiosity is able to come and lend a hand.
    9. I see my job essentially as helping other people ideas come to fruition. Of course, I have
my own ideas for fundraising, social and service events. However, I am more than willing
to help anyone with an idea that they feel is impactful.

    Co-Head Leader of JAGS 2019-20

    1. How can I utilize my role as co-head leader of JAGS to further develop the Jackson
Academy for Global Studies through the use of the JAGS leadership program?
    2. I will be looking into sustainable development goal number four, specifically target 4.7.
This target relates to my capstone project because it states that all learners attain the
knowledge to promote sustainable development. The goal of the JAGS curriculum is for
the students to work with the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) beginning
freshman year. By the time you graduate, you are equipped with the knowledge of the
SDGs to implement them into your life, your future career, etc. This target embodies
everything the JAGS curriculum aims to achieve, and that is why I am choosing to
connect this with with my capstone.
    3. The ultimate end goal of my capstone is to see the JAGS program flourish like never
before. I’d like to see more student involvement through more social events and
community service. I’d also like to see JAGS become a more tight-knit community rather
than just a large program in a large high school.
    4. My two mentors are Miss Arter and Mr. Preston. Miss Arter will be considered my expert
mentor because she was a part of student council for about a decade. Student council is a
student-run leadership group that lets students voice their opinions on changes they want
to see. This translates perfectly to my capstone and what I am doing with JAGS
leadership. Her expertise will be much appreciated. Mr. Preston is my second mentor, and
I have chosen him because not only has he been a very involved JAGS teacher, but he
also teaches the freshmen JAGS class; Miss Arter teaches the sophomore JAGS class.
Having two JAGS teachers of different grades will help bring a more diverse mindset of
what is happening in the JAGS program.
    5. The key points I will be researching this semester:
    ○ What is leadership and why it is important to learn at an early age
    ■ Many colleges and workplaces are looking for leaders today. It’s important
that students take the many opportunities they are given and make what
they can with it. Leadership means so much more than leading a group of
people in a certain direction. I want to find out what makes a great leader
and how we can implement it into our program.
    ○ Why it’s important for students to voice their opinions
    ■ JAGS is a student-led program. Its whole purpose is for the students to
have a say in how they want to see this program run. That’s why it is so
important to have the JAGS leadership group so the students can voice
their opinions on how they’d like to see JAGS.
    ○ Why collaboration is a healthy asset for a leader to have
    ■ There’s a reason we have two head leaders in two out the three JAGS
committees. True leaders are not overpowering. A leader is someone who
is able to help guide people in the right direction so that a project or idea
can come to fruition. A leader is someone who listens to others and only
adds to the conversation when it is deemed beneficial. A leader never just
talks to hear their own voice. It’s important that the JAGS leadership
group is a group who will be constantly bouncing ideas off of each other
to make a bigger, better product. The head leaders are there to help guide
the conversation, to keep communication between the members alive, and
to be a guide in helping others ideas come to life.
    6. My capstone’s ‘Take Action’ component is any activity/event that will occur throughout
the year that involves the JAGS Leadership group. For example, GO Night is the biggest
night for the JAGS program. From big events like Go Night to small activities like face
painting and selling blankets at football games, these events that will take place will be
examples of the JAGS Leadership’s best work. We will strive together to make JAGS the
best program it can be and to have the best year JAGS has seen yet.
    7. The JAGS Leadership program is already full of students from all grades except
freshmen. It would be incredible if we can build a connection with JMMS this year. This
will allow students at the middle school know what the JAGS program is all about. It will
allow them to get excited to join JAGS when they join high school, but it can also help
introduce the skills that every JAGS student acquires in high school. For example, we can
invite the middle schoolers to attend GO Night so they can see exactly what a JAGS
student does. Also, we can create some social events for the middle school that is
“sponsored by” the JAGS program. JAGS students would be volunteers and help the
event run smoothly. This way we are able to get the JAGS name well known throughout
    the middle school.
    8. My capstone involves the help of all JAGS leadership members. It also requires the help
of Ms. Stone. I have not had any issues as of now with my capstone. It has been smooth
sailing so far with communication working really well. My capstone also requires the
continuous communication between Gia and I which has had no problems thus far.
    9. I’m excited for my capstone project this year because I am very passionate about the
JAGS program. Ever since I truly learned about what JAGS stands for after freshman
year, I knew I wanted to apply myself to this program in some way. It’s a blessing that I
have been given this opportunity, and I can’t wait to see what we’re all able to
accomplish this year with the program together.

“The Sustainable Development Goals, Active in our Community and World”

    1. How do we bring about awareness and change through the United Nation’s
Sustainable Development Goals in our school and community?
    2. I will be connecting my capstone to all of the SDGs, considering that I will be
presenting all of them through my capstone.
    3. My capstone will be a two part presentation of the goals. Part of it will be a night of
dialogue between experts and JHS/JAGS students about bringing positive change in
our community and world with the SDGs in mind. The other part will be a painting
that I will create displaying all of the SDGs, which will be presented at the event.
Through this, I hope to educate not only JAGS kids but also the JHS students and
our community on why the SDGs matter to everyone.
    4. My mentors will be:
    a. Ms. Stone, Director of JAGS
    b. Mr. Knopick, former JAGS teacher and Assistant Principal of JHS
    5. For the 1st Semester, I plan to heavily research local organizations and nonprofits
that help with the goals of the UN on a local level. I will then contact them on my
cause and ask if they can speak at my event.
    6. My take action element is the actual carrying out of the event. The speakers I
contacted during 1st Semester will speak at this. Hopefully, I will be able to get
people throughout all areas of JHS: JSA, JAGS, NHS, Key Club, etc. as well as
people in the community to come and listen.
    7. I could possibly take it to JMMS, but I think it would just be more effective if I invited
all of the incoming JAGS freshman to this event in the Spring. The sharing of my
capstone will be at community meetings and the actual event.
    8. The help I would need would be with organizing the details of the actual event itself--
inviting all of JAGS to participate, getting the word out to the community to come,
    reserving the JCPA, etc.
    9. Nothing further.

Research on Immigration in Italy and France

    1. I want to research the problems, controversies and stigmas surrounding the topic of
immigration in Italy and France. There is much tension regarding immigration within
these countries’ governments. The topic is very complex, and I find the unfolding of the
issue is deeply interesting. I would like to write a 8 - 10 page research paper exploring the
histories and complexities of this topic. Then, I would like to do a presentation in a
community meeting where I can spread awareness about it.
    2. I want to connect it to Sustainable Goal 11, make cities and human settlements inclusive,
because I feel that this goal coincides most with the topic of immigration in general.
Regardless of all the politics and chatter that happens within the government and social
media, we are all part of the human race and in the end everybody wants the best for
these people. Goal 11 fits this purpose perfectly.
    3. The ultimate goal for my capstone is to investigate the issue myself and raise awareness/
educate the rest of the JAGS community. As American citizens, it is easy to forget what is
happening in the outside world, and after I do my thorough research, I would love to
present my findings at a community meeting so people my age can understand what is
happening in regards to immigration somewhere else. I think people would find the
similarities between our county and others’ very interesting, such as how Italy’s
government is extremely polarized on the issue just as is ours.
    4. Mentor #1: Lindsay (Madame) Krulock. She is a french teacher at our school; part of her
master coursework was to investigate immigration in France. She is highly educated on
this topic, as she has witnessed this first hand when she lived in France for 9 months.
Tentatively Mentor #2: I have connections with lawyers and people who work on the
Supreme Court in Rome. I have contacted my best friend over there to see if maybe her
family members would want to participate and answer a few questions on the matter. We
are still waiting to hear back from them. In the meantime, I can find a back up mentor if
this doesn’t work out. Maybe I could reach out to Walsh University, as they have a
campus in Rome and I am sure that many people at Walsh are educated on this topic.
    5. *French Immigration Laws
    * Italian Immigration Laws
    * Political Polarization within the countries (IN REGARDS TO IMMIGRATION)
    * Current Events (within the past 5 years) with immigration within these countries
*Statistics on the immigrants that move between France and Italy
    6. I would like to educate others in our community on the matter; and raise awareness in the
respect of presenting at a community meeting to the JAGS students. This way, I can
educate people my age in that they will have a deeper understanding of the immigration
    crisis all throughout Europe.
    7. I could bring my project to JMMS but I feel that I wouldn’t have the ability to explore
this topic to its full potential with middle schoolers. I don’t think they would be interested
and I think it is a bit too hard for these kids to understand something like this, let alone
learn something of rotarian value from it.
    8. If I hear that I can’t use the Supreme Court Judge in Italy, I will need help with
immediately finding someone else outside of the high school to be my second mentor. As
far as right now, I don’t need help.

Implementation of Water Filling Stations at JHS

    1. Emmy and I’s Capstone looks to implement a water bottle filling station in the commons.
In an effort to reduce our schools dependency on disposable water bottles. We want to
reduce our schools global trash footprint on the world. Encouraging students to use their
    own water bottles.
    2. Our Capstone ties greatly with the United Nations goal 12 “Responsible consumption and
production. Because we aim to reduce the consumption of single use plastic at Jackson
High School. Which ties into goal 12’s target that “By 2030, substantially reduce waste
generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.”
    3. This water bottle filling stations have filters and a better dispensing method, making them
more sanitary than attempting to hold your bottle up to the nozzle of a water fountain. I
also hope these water bottle filling stations will encourage more students to bring their
own reusable water bottle that they can refill in the commons whenever they are around. I
hope to reduce the amount of plastic disposable water bottles purchased from the
    cafeteria.
    4. Mr. Preston will be our Jackson Local Schools mentor, because he has already written a
grant to the Jackson Local Schools board to get a water bottle filling station a few years
ago, and is aware of the benefits they provide to the community. Mr. Hampshire intends
to be our expert mentor. He is the person responsible for producing and selling of the JHS
water bottles. So he is working with us on price and fundraising capabilities.
    5. Our first quarter we look to research and better understand.
    a. how we can apply for grants in order to raise money for the water bottle filling
    station.
    b. How and where we can sell reusable JHS water bottle to raise funds and also
promote our goals of reducing our schools waste output.
    c. The Installation and maintenance costs needed to maintain the water bottle filling
    station
    6. Our take action is to purchase a water bottle filling station with the commons and install
it by the end of the year. Also if our grant and fundraising opportunities allow for it. We
would like to purchase a second water bottle filling station to implement in another
    location in the school.
    7. We will help to expose our capstone to the community through our fundraising attempts.
We will make it clear that the reason we are trying to sell water bottles is too raise funds
for a water bottle filling station. If more funds come available to us through our grant and
our water bottle fundraising is a success at JHS, I would love to expand into the JMMS
and implement a water bottle filling station there as well. I believe that we could recruit
some JMMS students to help us sell JHS reusable water bottles.
    8. I believe the crucial roadblocks in our capstone that we need to get over is the process of
writing the grant and receiving our reusable water bottles. I will work with Mr. Preston to
write up the grant to the Herbert Hoover foundation, Who work with local environmental
projects around Stark County. We intend to use resources from the grant they wrote to the
Jackson Local Schools board. Emmy plans to work on receiving the JHS water bottles
and develop the process of selling them to the community for profit.

    Outdoor Club

Your Driving Question OR what you are claiming to solve with your Capstone.
    1. With my Capstone I am planning on connecting students together and do a
ton of service projects that would benefit the parks in Stark County. Trying
not to make it boring but just a fun club where people can be themselves
and also help out the community
What Sustainable Development Goal are you connecting your Capstone to, and why?
    2. It is connected to goals 14 and 15
What is the ultimate goal for your Capstone?
    3. To see that the outdoor club has made a difference in the park environment
    4. Mrs. Harpe, JHS teacher, Advisor of Outdoor Club
Need a second mentor I have two other people in mind to ask
What key points will you be researching (1st Semester) to support your Capstone? A concise
bulleted list explaining your research goals and points will suffice.
    5. What parks we can go to start cleaning up
What is your Capstone’s ‘Take Action’ component? This is what you will produce at the end of
    the 2nd semester, usually.
    6. Planning, Organizing events, and get more people involved.
    7. I’ve been trying to get others involved with the club by handing out flyers in
my classes. Some are interested while others don’t care at all.
    8. More members in the club since its new

    Jags Scrapbook

    My Capstone
    1. With my project, I am trying to make a connection between all of Jags. I want to create
something that immortalizes all of the memories and accomplishments that people make
    in this program.
    2. The Sustainable Development Goal I would connect my Capstone to would be goal
number 4, education, or more specifically 4.7 which is ensuring that all learners acquire
the knowledge needed to promote sustainable development including, through education
for sustainable development, human rights, promotion of culture of peace and non-
violence, global citizenship, and appreciation of cultural diversity. My Capstone should
be something that brings people together and showcases how Jags encourages all of these
things throughout the program. It should show pictures of a community coming together,
learning about different cultures and being accepting of all people.
    3. The ultimate goal for my Capstone is to create a scrapbook that contains pictures from
events and milestones throughout the year in Jags. It should be something that people can
look back on and remember the good moments, for people in the present to enjoy looking
through, and future generations to see what has been done. It should also show Jags
students at events outside of Jags to show the different activities that people participate in
in addition to this program. I want this to become a tradition that can be passed down
every year so it keeps the memory of Jags alive.
    4. My first mentor for this project is Julianne Litman, a math teacher at Jackson High
School. I chose her as a mentor because she is what you would call an “expert
scrapbooker”. She does scrapbooks and crafts a lot in her spare time, and even has a
whole room in her house dedicated to this sort of thing. She has offered to let me use her
tools and equipment as well as look at scrapbooks that she has made and help me put
mine together. My second mentor is Christopher Chow, a photographer. I chose him
because I will need to take a lot of the pictures that will be going in the scrapbook, and
wanted to get advice from a professional in this area. He can show me the technical side
of taking a photo, as well as how to capture a whole story in one picture.
    5. Some things I will need to research for this project include:
    ● When all of the Jags events are so I can be available to take pictures
    ● The best way to put together a scrapbook when it comes to the layout
    ● How to take better photos when it comes to looking at lighting and settings
    ● Looking more into the technical side of photography and what photography is all
about to put together a photo research journal
    6. The ‘Take Action’ component of my Capstone will be creating a physical and digital
scrapbook that details everything that JAGS has done throughout the 2019-2020 school
year that will be available for anyone to look at if they want to.
    7. My capstone could be kept in R100 for anyone to look at if they’d like to, as well as
being made into a digital scrapbook to be more readily accessible to anybody. Most of my
pictures would also be posted on the JAGS instagram page. It would be a really great
thing to bring to JMMS as a way for incoming students to see what we really do in JAGS.
    8. The only things I would need help with is getting pictures from the Jags community of
events that I can’t be at.

    Scoliosis Awareness

Scoliosis is introduced to many kids at a young age during a middle school examination. I intend to help people understand what scoliosis is, how to work, and my personal experiences with the disease. I would also like to write an informative paper.
My capstone will be focused around sustainable development goal number 3 and 4
Development goal 3 will be focusing on promoting health and sustainability with scoliosis because it a lifelong disease
For development goal number 4 it will be focusing more on spreading awareness of what the disease does and how it affects the youth that are diagnosed with it. Along with informing people of treatments and how it can be corrected.
The goal for my capstone is to bring down the stress and fear that people have when they are diagnosed with scoliosis along with allowing them to understand what it is and how it will affect them.
My first mentor is going to be my chiropractor named Dr. Scott Snow. He has a doctorate in chiropractic and physical therapy. He wil explain his day to day practices on people with scoliosis
My second mentor is going to be Mrs. Suchoski she teaches anatomy, physiology and biology. This will help me understand the structure and what goes on with scoliosis.
    My research will revolve around
    The diagnosis of scoliosis
    The treatment
    And spreading awareness
Also seeing people personal experiences before and after treatment
And the specifics of surgery and other types of treatment
Also try and get rid of misinformation
Taking action for me would be being able to make posters with credible information and spreading awareness around the high school and the middle school because when i was in middle school that was when I was diagnosed with scoliosis through the schools examination
I will be spreading my research via posters and survey asking students of JHS asking them if they know about certain things that involve scoliosis. And taking those surveys to see what misinformation I can disprove by showing the proper information throughout the schools.
The only help I need is just getting posters and the ability to spread my research throughout the school approved.

    Yoga for Recovering Addicts

    My Capstone
    1. Driving question: How can yoga and mediation be used to help those suffering
    with addiction?
    2. The Sustainable Development Goal I am connecting with my Capstone is Goal 3
(Good Health and Well-Being). This goal works perfectly with my Capstone
because I’m working on helping recovering addicts become happier and healthier
in both body and mind through yoga.
    3. My end goal through this Capstone is to show others how they can use yoga and
meditation to help their recovery process and to continue sobriety. Drugs and
alcohol are “solutions” to an emotional problem but if we replace it with yoga, it
can fill that emotional or spiritual hole in a healthy way.
    4. I’m in the process of connecting with Dave, the co-leader of the Interval
Brotherhood (rehab home located in Green). My JLS mentor will be Mrs. Rankin,
she used to organize yoga for the staff at Jackson High School because she loves
    to practice!
    5. The key points that I will be researching are the benefits of yoga, addiction in the
world/America/Ohio, overcoming addiction through yoga, and how yoga can
    relieve withdrawal symptoms.
    6. I would like to interview people who struggle/have struggled with addiction and
take their photo. I’m going to create either a website or a poster consisting of the
pictures as well as their stories about addiction and how yoga has helped them.
    7. I feel like social media is one of the most effective ways to reach people. I would
like to share the stories of the people I interview (with permission of course), as
well as spreading posters around the school.
    8. So far I feel pretty good about my Capstone. I’ll be sure to reach out to Ms. Stone
if I run into any issues along the way.
    9. During the summer, I went through a training to become a certified yoga
instructor. During one of the trainings, I shadowed Amy, a yoga instructor who
teaches at Interval Brotherhood. After shadowing her, I knew this was what I
wanted to do with my certification. I want to learn more about the benefits of
yoga for someone who suffers with addiction so I decided to do this for my
    Capstone!

    Model UN Club

    1. How can I reopen the Model United Nations club at Jackson High School and use it to
expand people’s knowledge of the world around them?
    2. I’m connecting my capstone to goal 17 because it encompasses all of the goals. In Model
UN we work together to come up with solutions to all sorts of problems throughout our
world. We could make a resolution on anything from gender inequalities in the
    workplace to immigration.
    3. My ultimate goal is to have the club continue on for many years after I graduate. I think
that Model UN is extremely beneficial for everyone that takes part in it. I’m hoping to
have a strong first year that allows us to establish a good reputation for the club and
makes it easy for people to run the club in the future without me.
    4. For my mentor in Jackson I chose Mr. Marlett. I decided to work with him because he
teaches world history and runs the mock trial club at Jackson High School. My expert
mentor is Zackery McCoy. I chose him because he runs a successful Model UN club at
Lake High School and runs SCHMUN so he has a lot of experience with Model UN.
    5. Research Points
    a. The rules of Model UN so I can moderate our club meetings
    b. Conferences that I can take the club to
    i. The rules for each individual conference
    c. World events that can tie in with whatever topic we choose
    d. Fundraising ideas and opportunities
    6. I will be taking the Model UN club to conferences around Ohio. In these conferences, we
will write resolutions in which we will have to come up with solutions to various issues
plaguing our world today. This will allow us to use our research to hopefully help better
    the world in some way.
    7. I could take the members of the Model UN club to the middle school during the school
day. We could have a miniature conference at the middle school that shows off what
JAGS offers its students. We could set up stands for different countries with some
information about the country and maybe some food from the region. The middle
schoolers could come down for one period to see it.
    8. The main thing I’m going to need help with is fundraising. Going to these different
conferences is very expensive and I want to make it so as many people can come with us
as possible. Without fundraising it would cost the students a fortune to be able to go to
    every event.
    9. This capstone should help broaden student’s perspectives on complex issues. By
participating in Model UN students are forced to look at problems from the perspective of
a country that they probably don’t know much about. Model UN helps us produce more
informed and educated adults that are able to see situations from multiple sides.

    Kindi App Reading Project
    1. All over the world, including in our own community, there are children that struggle with
reading and have no one to practice with at home. With my capstone project, I hope to
help solve this issue by creating a program for students in my school district who are not
native speakers of English where they can practice with students who are. Although I am
focusing on working with students in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program
in the Jackson Local School District, this problem can be applied to children of all
backgrounds, and even children who do primarily speak English often need practice
    reading.
    2. I am connecting my Capstone to Sustainable Development Goal Four which is “ensure
inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for
all.” I chose this goal because the purpose of my project is to provide students in the ESL
program in my school district with a resource that can benefit their education. I believe
that education is extremely important and is the foundation upon which societies
progress. Everyone should have access to the best education possible, and I would like to
help make this happen by finding ways to help students who may be struggling with
    reading practice outside of school.
    3. Ultimately, I would like to establish a group of students in the ESL Program in the
Jackson Local School District at the various elementary schools, Jackson Memorial
Middle School, and Jackson High School who want extra practice speaking English and
reading as well as a group of student “reading buddies” at Jackson High School that will
volunteer to practice reading with the ESL students using the Kindi App, an app created
to give students around the world the opportunity to practice reading with someone at
home via an audio call through the app that connects them with volunteers. I hope that
students from both groups will be able to read together regularly and that the students in
the ESL program will always have a student volunteer to practice reading with when they
want extra help. I hope to impact the ESL program in the Jackson Local School District
by providing its students, teachers, and other staff members with a resource that they can
continue to utilize for many years even after I graduate, and I hope that many students
will benefit from this project by seeing improvements in their ability to read and speak
    English.
    4. My first mentor is Mrs. Cassandra Spangler, District Coordinator for Jackson Local
Schools who works closely with the ESL program. My second mentor is Mr. Mike
Clarke, Developer of the Kindi App from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s
    Refugee Learning Accelerator.
    5. Key points I will be researching:
    a. Information on the Kindi App and how to use it
    b. Finding information about and requesting a demo for Kindi Classroom, a new
development in Kindi designed specifically for schools
    c. Looking for student volunteers who would be interested in and are a good fit for
this project and looking into when they are available and if they speak any other
    languages
    d. Information on how many students in the ESL program will be participating in
this project, what grade levels they are in, what their native languages are, their
reading levels, and when they are available
    e. Information on the Jackson Local School District ESL program, how it works,
and what the teachers do with their students to help them learn English
    f. Strategies or techniques to use when helping others learn
    g. Technology that is already available to ESL students and student volunteers, what
technology is needed to use Kindi, and how to go about making new technology
available to ESL students and student volunteers if necessary
    h. Importance of education, problems with education in various societies today, and
UN progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal Four
    6. The “Take Action” component of my Capstone will be gathering the group of ESL
students and student volunteers from Jackson High School that will be participating in
this project, setting up a Kindi Classroom site for the group, and having myself and the
student volunteers participate in reading sessions with the ESL students on a regular
    basis.
    7. I will share my Capstone with others by involving ESL students from the elementary
schools, JMMS, and Jackson High School in my Capstone. I would also like to try to
involve students outside of JAGS in my project by giving them the opportunity to be
student volunteers, and depending on how many I will be needing and whether that
number grows as the year goes on, I could also try to include students from JMMS in
volunteering. Also, if this project goes well, I would like to try to extend it to other
groups that may have students that could use extra reading practice, even students who
are native speakers of English who might just struggle with reading.
    8. Currently I am in need of “reading buddies” who would volunteer to use Kindi to practice
reading with ESL students on a regular basis. Reading sessions usually only take a few
minutes, but these sessions can be very beneficial for students that want extra practice
reading in English, and it is very important that I have volunteers who can help them. I
am also looking for student volunteers who could potentially drive to one of the
elementary schools during eighth period or after school a few days to work with students
while they are still in school. Right now, I am working on making a list of volunteers and
what times they are available throughout the day (both during school and outside of
school) to use the app, so if any students who are interested could email me and tell me
when they are available it would be very helpful.
    9. I am very excited to see the progress that will be made with my Capstone by the end of
this year, and I hope that it really makes a positive impact on the lives of the students that
will participate in it. Depending on how everything goes, I would like to somehow
continue this project after I have graduated from Jackson High School and maybe expand
it by reaching out to other groups that could benefit from it or maybe have someone in
JAGS in the grade below me who needs an idea for their Capstone next year continue
with this project and help it grow. Also, throughout this entire year, if anyone has any
suggestions on what I could do to make this project better or any suggestions on ways the
Kindi App could be more useful, please let me know. I would like to hear feedback from
those who will be involved in this project so that I can make it the best it can possibly be,
and Mike Clarke (one of the developers of the app and one of my mentors) told me to
give him feedback on ways to improve Kindi since it is still fairly new and is sort of in a
    testing phase.

Title of your Capstone: Go Green Club!

Please explain/answer the following points IN THE ORDER I HAVE LISTED THEM:
Your Driving Question OR what you are claiming to solve with your Capstone.
    1. How going green can better a community
What Sustainable Development Goal are you connecting your Capstone to, and why?
    2. I’m focusing on Sustainable Goal 12. Goal 12 focuses on why it's important to
reduce our ecological footprint by changing how we produce and consume goods.
Goal 12 also encourages people to recycle and reuse products instead of letting
them go to waste, while also reducing the amount of products we use. I chose this
goal because the Go Green club is all about teaching and allowing people to
volunteer their time to reducing, reusing and recycling.
What is the ultimate goal for your Capstone?
    3. The ultimate goal for my Capstone is to bring people together and teach them how
to practice and take part in sustainable living.
The names of your two mentors AND their qualifications/warrants that make them an expert mentor for
your Capstone. Your parents/family members cannot be your mentors. You need one JLS employee and
another expert as a mentor (can be any adult who is an expert in your Capstone area).
Ryann Despot, JHS Teacher, Advisor of the Film Club (you chose her because you are making a
    EX: Ms.
documentary film about water sustainability in conflict zones) AND Mr. Marc Morgan, Superintendent,
Water Reclamation Facility for the City of Canton, Ohio.***FYI: You will be turning in a mini-bio on your
two mentors for the 2nd Quarter.
    4. Mr. Dria, JHS Horticulture Adivisor ( He teaches and has a understanding in
enviormalism and sustanability.) AND Miss Hull, JHS AP Enviormental Science
Teacher ( Go Green Club advisor)
What key points will you be researching (1st Semester) to support your Capstone? A concise bulleted list
explaining your research goals and points will suffice.
    5.
    • Global food waste in restraunts and grocery chains
    • How To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint
    • Sustainable Agriculture
What is your Capstone’s ‘Take Action’ component? This is what you will produce at the end of the 2nd
    semester, usually.
    6. I will promote the Go Green Club
    7. Yes, I could make sure the Go Green Club exist for a longtime after I leave JHS by
talking to kids who are intrested in emviormentalism.
Where and how do you need help with your Capstone? Do you need a second mentor? Do you need
help getting started? Do you need help with a drive or collection? All you gotta do is ask, my people -
that is why I am making the information you give me public! Once this assignment goes live, it will be on
our JAGS/JHS webpage - you’d be surprised who looks at it!
    8. I just need to get people actively involved in the club, so all I need is promotion.
Anything else we would need to know about your project ideas, goals, etc.
    9. No.

Generating Supplies and Support for “Catalyst Resources International”

    My Capstone
    1. With my capstone project, I plan on helping and supporting Catalyst Resources
International (CRI) as they continue their work on trying to solve poverty in Guatemala.
    2. I am connecting my project to sustainable development goal number 3: good health and
well-being because CRI does many things that can all be traced back to this goal. Things
such as having an orphanage, conducting feeding programs, supporting medical and
dentals clinics, or building homes for the people of Guatemala that need them.
    3. My ultimate goal of my capstone is to not only to simply raise funds and resources for
CRI, but to raise awareness of their mission and to inspire others to help in Guatemala
and other developing countries. Of course, I am also hoping to raise money for CRI so
they are able to continue their influential work.
    4. Mr. MarLett, JHS Teacher, World History teacher and geography expert. I chose Mr.
MarLett because I know he will hold me accountable and on top of my project which
won’t be difficult because he will see me twice a week for Mock Trial practice AND
Paula Greene, co-founder of CRI. I chose Paula because she is the reason I found CRI
and am wanting to do this capstone in the first place.
    5. I will be researching the poverty levels, infrastructure grade, and hunger level of
Guatemala as well as track Guatemala's progress with the SD goals. In my mind, it looks
much like the Global Math Project where you can see the progress and the impact that
    our help may have.
    6. My “Take Action” component is planning on being a fundraiser of sorts. So far I’ve come
up with a quarter auction and a golf outing. The obstacles here are finding sponsors to
donate things for the quarter auction and the fact that a golf outing in the spring would be
    hard to pull off.
    7. I’ll be sharing my capstone work through my social media, my friends, my activities, my
church, and all the places I ask to sponsor and/or donate to my cause. This perhaps isn’t
the best project to take to JMMS, but if someone shows interest then I could probably use
    the help.
    8. If anyone has any ideas to make the fundraiser a success or knows of a willing donor, it’d
be greatly appreciated. Also, SPREADING THE WORD, especially when it comes down
to it and we need to spread the word about the fundraiser to make it a success.

The Meaning of a Flag Retirement

    1. How can we pay respect to active duty servicemen, women, veterans, and those who
made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our country?
    2. Although there is not a defined Sustainable Development Goal that discusses nationalism
or the treatment of national icons, we can include the flag ceremony and research based
on U.S nationalism into Goal 4 and 16. Goal 4 is the improvement of education, relating
to how we can teach the public how to make flags last, when they should retire them, and
the history of the flag and what it means to America. The burning of the flags may be
considered offensive to some that are uneducated about the correct procedures, so
ensuring all guidelines are followed and there is no desecration of the flag. Retiring
American flags fits into goal 16 because we will be working directly with the VFW
which is an organization that supports veterans after their service. This organization is
inclusive of all veterans and helps create a family between them which is important
because they all went through the same experience and can support each other.
    3. The United States Flag Code states: "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no
longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by
burning.” Therefore, one step of the capstone would be to gather flags that are no longer
suited to fly over the country and to retire them in the most reverent way possible. This
would include the preparation of the flags for the ceremony along with the ceremony
itself. We also want to work with the Veterans of Foreign Wars to collect flags. Finally, a
research paper/project based on the history of the flag and nationalism in America would
be the final step to the project.
    4. We wanted our mentors to be people who truly understand nationalism and what the
United States flag stands for which is why we chose Mr. Knopick for our JLS mentor and
Mr. Beard, a scoutmaster, as our experts. Mr. Knopick has taught JAGS United States
history along with APUSH and will help us further our knowledge about the United
States flag and what it stands for. He will also help us communicate with administration
about our memorial bench and if it would be possible. Mr. Beard has been the
scoutmaster of Troop 1921 for the past 6 years and has vast knowledge on the facts about
the retirement of the flag. He also served in the U.S Army and would be a great candidate
to help us with the capstone project.
    5. What we want to research is...
    ● The origins of the flag
    ● The thought process behind the flag’s design
    ● What the flag represents to veterans and people in service
    ● What retiring the flag is and how to do it
    ● Why the flag is retired that way
    6. The take action aspect of the Capstone project includes the collection of flags, and the
    preparation of the flags.
    7. To help get the message out about our Capstone project, we want to travel to troops in the
area and talk to them about donating flags, time, and people. This can help publicize the
project around the county which will help with every aspect of what needs to be done to
complete it. We also want to recruit members of the communities through the use of
flyers and announcements at the school and highly trafficked areas. This is definitely
something that we could bring to JMMS because starting education about a topic that
relates to all of us would be helpful for the younger generation to learn about.
    8. The main help we will need is truly just having volunteers able to help us prepare the
flags for the ceremony. We already have flags that are ready to be retired, and we have
plans to start drives around the community. We have started the Capstone already, and
the troops that are in Jackson have been very helpful with donating flags to give us a
    starting point.

    Diaper Bank Organization

    My Capstone
    1. What Are the Differences Between Higher Quality Diapers And Their Lower Alternative
Brands? For my research class, I am going to research the diaper industry and how most
higher-quality brands such as Huggies and Pampers own cheaper diapers brands as well,
such as Goodnights and Luvs. The purpose of this research is to see if there is a
difference in quality and prices. Also, through my JAGS Capstone, I want to do a diaper
drive or to collect money for the new (National) Stark County Diaper Bank.

    2. The Sustainable Development Goal connected to my capstone would be no poverty
because diapers are extremely expensive- even the lower quality ones. The average baby
can go through 2,500 to 3,000 diapers per year, and the price can range from $800 to
$1,300 depending on the “quality.” Most people around the world, let alone Stark County,
can’t afford diapers. (The diaper bank in Stark was founded six months ago and was
recently accepted by the National Diaper Bank.) According to the Stark County Diaper
Bank, “One in five children in Stark County under the age of five live in poverty. One in
three American families reports experiencing diaper need.” They also stated that “babies
need an average eight to ten diapers a day.”

    3. The prices of diapers are extreme, and with my research, I am going to collect the costs
of each “major” brand in the market that I see fit to show the average price of a diaper
(for each size). My research would be the first to prove that these companies are
underlying dominating the diaper industry. Their lower-quality brands show that they are
affiliated with their higher-priced diaper brand. However, the higher qualities don’t show
anywhere their affiliation unless you look deeply on the website of their central
cooperation. The main companies dominating the industry are Kimberly-Clark and
Procter and Gamble. Kimberly-Clark owns Huggies and the cheaper model Goodnights.
Procter and Gamble own Pampers and Luvs. These four diapers can be found at any
superstore, while the other smaller branders are found in select stores. The goal of my
capstone is to help raise awareness, money, or diapers for people in need in Stark. I have
already collected 372 diapers through a donation and will hope to have a drive at a JAGS
event. Another goal of my capstone is to gather the research needed to compare the
brands and to figure out why these companies own lower-quality brands and why they
dominate all the markets. Some diapers are only sold in select stores, but these four
brands listed above are found in mainstream stores.

    4. My first mentor would be Mrs. Hexamer (Shannon). She is the president of Shannon
English Marketing and the founder of the Stark County Diaper Bank. My second mentor
would be Mrs. Barnes, and she is my AP Research teacher. My first mentor would help
with the diaper bank, and my second would help me conduct my research.

    5. Key Points Researched
    a. Different types of diapers
    b. How to host a diaper drive
    c. Cost and how much consumers should actually pay versus what they averagely
    pay
    d. Quality and will possibly conduct a chemical test to see if the chemical SAP will
be found on each one (2nd/3rd nine-week)
    e. Water test as well to show how much each diaper can hold (2nd/3rd nine-week)
    f. How are diapers made
    g. Poverty rates in Stark compared to the rest of the world
    h. How other diaper banks succeed

    6. My capstone “take action” component collecting diapers for the stark county diaper bank.
Also, another “take action” component of my capstone is to conduct my own research to
compare the lower and higher quality brands. I was thinking of a JAGS event, or
somewhere locally, I can have a diaper drive or an event to collect donations that would
    be fun for JAGS members.

    7. I will share my research through the AP Research class, where it will be published and
possibly at Senior Night. I don’t think middle school students would be interested in my
diaper project, but I assume other fellow JAGS members would be interested when my
research is fully complete in the third nine weeks.

    8. I will need help setting up a drive and to see what day is possible. I want to either have a
drive or collect money for the non-profit. Also, we could wrap diapers for them when
they have diapers in stock. The Stark County Diaper Banks either has a lot of diapers or
none to hand out. They have a diaper donation box at Clothes mentor, but I would like to
    expand it to other locations.

    9. There is nothing else to be added, but the fact that I will be researching for my class and
condensing my research topic in the upcoming month.

    Memorial Bench for Veterans

    1. How can we honor America’s fallen and missing troops in our community of Jackson?
    2. We will relate our project to two of the United Nations goals. First, we will relate it to
the fourth goal which is the promotion of life long education. Our project will include a
collaborative paper about nationalism and how to pay respect to our troops. We will also
be educating the public on the topic of flag retirement and the proper way of disposing of
American flags. Our project will also support the sixteenth goal because we will be
working directly with the VFW which is an “inclusive institution”. The VFW provides
support to veterans after war and allows them to connect to people who have been
through the same experiences as them. This organization is the backbone for many
veterans which is why I plan on working with them to discuss how to acquire a memorial
bench and where to place it.
    3. America’s current and former troops put everything on the line for the sake our of
country and freedom. We would not be the country we are today without their sacrifice
which is why I plan on paying tribute to them by installing a memorial bench in Jackson
for them. This bench will be a permanent “thank you” to them and honor America’s
    troops.
    4. We wanted our capstone mentors to be knowledgeable and interested in the topic of
nationalism which is why we chose Mr. Knopick and Mr. Beard. Mr. Knopick taught
JAGS American history and APUSH which makes him well versed in the topic of
nationalism. Everyday you could see how passionate he was about America through his
teaching and will be a helpful mentor for our project. Our second mentor is Mr. Beard.
Mr. Beard was in the Army and now is the scoutmaster of troop 1921 and has been for
    six years.
Having a veteran as one of our mentors will help us understand
nationalism and give us perspective from a veteran. He will also help us get in contact
with and work with the VFW which will be a major asset for us.
    5. Things we want to research are…
    ● Nationalism in America
    ● The VFW
    ● How people around America are paying it back to veterans
    ● Steps to acquire memorial bench
    ● Where an effective place to put the bench would be
    6. My take action component will consist of researching memorial benches in other places
around Ohio and the steps taken to have them installed. I will then try to replicate this
process in Jackson. I will reach out to the VFW for fundraising help and support
throughout the project. Once a bench is acquired I will install it in the chosen location
with the help of other JAGgers.
    7. I will promote my project through the community by creating flyers to be hung around
the high school and around the community in restaurants. This will show people in
Jackson about the bench so they can visit it and pay respect to our veterans. These flyers
will raise awareness about the bench and we may possibly be asked to do an interview for
a news paper like the Canton Rep did for Massillon’s memorial bench.
    8. I will most likely need help with raising money for the memorial bench. I believe the
actual installation of the bench and everything leading up to that will be reasonable
except for the money aspect because nothing is free in this world. I will donate to my
cause but benches are expensive and will require fundraising or a fair amount of
    donations.
    9. Since I am working with Nate Sisson and he is focusing on retiring flags, I was thinking
about doing an example of retiring an American flag and record it then upload it to
Youtube. This video would be similar to a tutorial and would educate people on the
proper way to retire a flag. We could also include a video of the installation of the
memorial bench from start to finish and show the end result.

    Blankets for Change

1.) Driving Question: How can I, along with society, help suffering children in need?
2.) I am connecting my capstone to Sustainable Development Goal 3, Good Health and
Well-being but more specifically, Target 3.8 : Achieve universal health coverage,
including financial risk protection, access to quality essential health-care services and
access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines and vaccines for all.
My capstone will go along with this goal because these blankets will provide children
warmth and comfort and make their overall experience at the hospital or other place they
are residing in better, which is part of giving them quality health care.
3.) The ultimate goal of my capstone is to make these sick or abandoned children feel loved
and appreciated as they might not experience that feeling very often. I want to make sure
they are aware that people are rooting for them and stand with them and that they are not
    in this journey alone.
4.) My JLS mentor is Ms. Stone. She is the head of The Jackson Academy of Global Studies
and teaches Model UN. She has overseen many service projects and is very aware of
how much work needs to be put in to make something to this extent happen. She is also
the advisor of Interact Club, which allows students to give back to their community and
take action. My expert mentor is Krista Graham. She is a Child-Life Specialist that
works at Akron Children’s Hospital and has been for many years. She has a lot of
experience with kids in these types of situations and knows different methods of making
    them feel comfortable.
5.) Research goals for the first semester:
    ● How many kids are given up for adoption each year
    ● The adoption process itself and life in an orphanage
    ● About how many children go to Akron Children’s each year for an illness,
    temporary and long-term
    ● What life is like for them in the hospital or at home if they are allowed to
    travel back and forth
    ● The average amount of time a child remains in the hospital
    ● How much felt is needed for at least 75 blankets
6.) My capstone’s “take action” component will be holding a blanket making night at either
the end of January or the beginning of February where people can come and make felt
blankets to donate to Akron Children’s and potentially also Stark County Jobs and Family
    Services.
7.) My capstone will be shared with others because it requires many people to get all of the
blankets made. I will be able to share my work and ideas to them and they will get the
chance to participate in what I am doing. As for JMMS, I could extend an invitation to
middle schoolers to attend the blanket night but the event would still remain at the high
    school.
8.) I will need help acquiring the felt for blankets and also setting up for the event when it
happens. There will also be hot chocolate and snacks with a movie so I will need help
getting those supplies as well. But more importantly I need people to attend the event
and make blankets because without them, my capstone will not reach its full potential.
As of now I know about when I want the event but the supplies will definitely require
    other people.
9.) I want people to know that these blankets will really mean something to these kids so I
want the people that come help at the event to understand that even though this might not
mean anything to them or have any value to them, it does for the recipients so be creative
and have fun. Do not come because you feel you have to, come because you actually
    want to make a difference!

    Red Cross Blood Drive

    1. How can I get students in JAGS involved in a cause that will help our community and
    save lives?
    2. The Sustainable Development Goal that I am connecting to my capstone is goal 3: Good
Health and Well-being. This goal states that we should strive to “ensure healthy lives and
promote well being for all at all ages”. Goal 3 best fits my capstone because there is a
constant demand for blood in hospitals around the world, including our community. By
encouraging students, parents, and others in the community to donate their time and
blood, I can help ensure that when somebody needs a blood transfusion to save their life
they can rest assured that someone in the community has already stepped up to help.
    3. The ultimate goal of my capstone is to host a successful blood drive. This entails the
participation of students in JAGS to volunteer, or donate, if needed, and spreading the
word throughout the community to get as many people signed up for the drive as
    possible.
    4. My “expert” mentor will be Ashley George, an employee at the Red Cross. She will meet
with me to discuss the details of my blood drive as well as organize the medical
professionals and work out all of the logistics of the blood drive. We have already met in
person once to try and find a location for the blood drive. Our next step thus far is to find
a date for the drive and start thinking about how to encourage people to donate. As for
my second mentor, I am not quite sure who will take this position. Because of the nature
of my capstone, I am finding it hard to find a mentor that will have a useful position
within the project. The expert mentor and I bear all of the responsibility. However, I am
planning to ask Rui Tan to be my second mentor. Even though Ms. Tan does not have
any experience in this field, she works at JHS and is able to keep my capstone on track
and on schedule. I am able to meet with her before school or during select periods of the
day and I have a close relationship with this teacher. I know that at the very least, she can
help me brainstorm ideas and make sure that my project is being completed.
    5. The information that I will be researching to supplement my capstone includes:
    ○ How blood donations make their way to a patient
    ○ Local and national statistics on how the donations are used and how often blood is
    ○ Differences in blood types and which are most commonly needed
    6. My capstone’s “take action” component involves getting as many people in the
community as possible to come out and donate blood on the scheduled date. This will
directly affect local hospitals as they are constantly in need of blood donations.
    7. In order to spread the word about my capstone, I was planning on making an
announcement or event for JAGS and Interact students to get involved. Furthermore, I am
planning on notifying local businesses and other school districts of the event. In order to
encourage JAGS students to participate or donate blood, perhaps it would be a good idea
to offer a set number of volunteer hours for a blood donation, this way I can get more
    people involved.
    8. Something I need help with for my capstone is finding a second mentor. My mentor from
the Red Cross has most of the bases covered and is guiding me with the rest of the things
that need to be done. I am not sure how to include my second mentor into the capstone in
a way that makes their position relevant. Since my first mentor works directly with the
Red Cross, she is able to handle most things and explain my role to me as the organizer
    of the blood drive.

    West Virginia Mission trip

    1) In my capstone, I really want to create a bit of a difference outside of my own community
here in Jackson Township. Helping out kids my age in a juvenile delinquent center in
West Virginia really defines this difference.
    2) This trip really connects well to goal #3 Good Health and Well-Being. I am mainly trying
to help out these kids who took a bad path in life. Just because they chose the wrong path
doesn’t mean that they should feel isolated and depressed. By visiting them and trying to
make them feel happy even though they are technically incarcerated is the definition of
this goal. I am trying to promote the well-being of these kids’ lives.
    3) My ultimate goal is similar to what I am trying to solve. I want to create a difference
outside of my own local community.
    4) Ashley Quinn- Youth Minister at Saint Michael’s Parish. She helps aid the mission trip to
    West Virginia.
Mr. Gillette- English teacher and former Jags teacher. He can help me comprehend the
idea of helping others outside of my own community, and help me connect them to the
    SDGs.
    5) My research will mainly be focused on the mental aspect of helping out children who are
incarcerated like the ones I will be visiting.
    - How just a little thing that I am doing helps out these kids’ lives
    - How I can turn this mission trip into something more, maybe that might be
starting a fund to help out juveniles more or donations in our own school
    - How I can accurately connect this to SDG #5
    6) I, myself, am going to West Virginia to take action and really improve these kids' lives. I
believe that is a big take action component.
    7) I think I can make my capstone something more by getting more people involved on the
trip. Spreading awareness can improve this capstone and really get a sense of what I am
    trying to show and do.
    8) I think I can mostly handle this capstone. However, if I run into trouble I know that there
    will be help for me.

    Interact Club

    Your Driving Question
    1. How can I take action to make a difference in my school and community,
discover new cultures, promote international understanding, and become a
leader in my school and community?
What Sustainable Development Goal are you connecting your Capstone to, and why?

    2. I am connecting Sustainable Development Goal #4 because Goal 4.7
stresses that “all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to
promote sustainable development, including, among others, through
education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human
rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence,
global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s
contribution to sustainable development” I feel like this is a very accurate
description of the impact I want to leave on the members of Interact Club as
well as my community. I want to help others figure out different ways that
they can better their community, recognize key issues in our world, enable
students to acquire invaluable life skills and knowledge, and leave a long-
    lasting positive impact on society.
What is the ultimate goal for your Capstone?

    3. I want to be able to inspire people to help their community in a way that
benefits more than just themselves. I want people to see the value of
    helping others.
List the names of your two mentors.

    4. Ms. Kathryn Stone, JHS Teacher, JAGS Coordinator, Interact Club
Advisor and Model UN Advisor and Dr. Soudamini Patel, International
    Rotarian.
What key points will you be researching to support your Capstone?

    5.
    a. How can I address an important issue in our school or community and
    improve the situation?
    i. How can this issue be addressed to best help this target audience?
    b. How can increased participation in school events or issues improve our
    school climate?
    c. How can issues around the world affect our community?
What is your Capstone’s ‘Take Action’ component?

    6. Interact Club is heavily focused on volunteering and helping the community
but a brief list would have to include the Pi Mile, blanket making, helping
middle schoolers get involved, making cards for members of our
community, and cleaning up the canal.
How will you be sharing your Capstone work with others? Is your Capstone project something
    you could take to JMMS?

    7. I will be sharing my Capstone with others on social media and just by being
present in the community. My hope is that by doing more things we will be
able to become more prevalent in the community. My Capstone is definitely
something that I can take to JMMS because as the head of Interact Club I
have been given the opportunity to try and connect students with JAGS and
    Interact/Rotary.
Where and how do you need help with your Capstone?

    8. I ask that more people become aware of all the good Interact Club does and
are able to see how valuable such a club can be in today's society full of
    negativity.
