In the event of an emergency, this webpage will serve as the district’s central source for information and will be updated regularly.
During an active incident and any related investigation, the District will coordinate all public communication with the Jackson Township Police Department. Information will be shared as it becomes available and can be confirmed.
Please note that the District’s communication during an emergency is guided by federal privacy protections under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), as well as by law enforcement direction. While we are committed to providing timely and accurate updates, some details may be limited or withheld in order to protect student privacy and preserve the integrity of an active investigation. We will share as much information as we responsibly can within those legal and safety requirements.
The District will continue communicating with families and the community throughout the emergency. Updates may also be shared through social media and delivered directly to families by email, text, and robocall. However, this webpage will remain the most reliable source for the most current information the District is able to provide at any given time.

We know emergencies can be stressful. Please know that we are prepared to take care of your child and are dedicated to keeping everyone in our school community safe. Here are a few things we would like you to know in the event of an emergency during your child’s school day:

WHAT TO DO
If you receive a robocall, listen to the full message. Please, do not call the school. Keeping phone lines open for emergency use is critical.
In an emergency, please do not come to your child’s school unless you are instructed to do so. If pickup is required, you will receive specific directions about where and when to report. Keeping the area clear helps emergency personnel respond safely and efficiently. We understand it is difficult to wait, and we appreciate your patience. If a reunification plan is needed, it may not be at the location of your child's school building.
Please do not call or text your child’s cell phone during a lockdown. A phone ringing, vibrating, or lighting up may create additional risk.
Check this webpage regularly for updates, and watch your phone and email for direct notifications from the District. Rely on official communication from Jackson Local School District and public safety agencies for accurate information.
Before an emergency, make sure you are registered to receive District notifications by following the instructions on the communications webpage. Also ensure your child’s emergency contact information is accurate and current.
WHEN WILL FAMILIES BE NOTIFIED

Families will be notified during an emergency situation. This includes lockdowns, natural disasters, evacuations, etc.

During an emergency, the District will share factual information as quickly as possible. Because early details may be incomplete or change rapidly, verifying information may delay an update. We appreciate your patience as we confirm the facts before sharing them with families and the community.

Families may not be notified during a nonemergency situation or incidents that do not have a building-wide impact. This may include situations where no immediate threat is perceived to the general student and staff population. For example, this could include some medical emergencies or classroom disruptions. Family notifications in these situations are determined on a case-by-case basis for those students affected.
TERMS YOU MIGHT HEAR
The following are terms you might hear during an emergency situation at your child's school and what they mean:

Lockdown - This means that there is an identified threat at a building. Hallways are cleared and all students and staff are to lock classroom doors, stay quiet and out of sight within the classroom. Exterior doors to the building are also locked. The students and staff remain in lockdown until the building is deemed safe or evacuation is possible.
- Shelter-in-Place - A shelter-in-place is ordered to protect from an external threat or condition such as severe weather or crime in the community. Everyone is brought inside - no entry or exit is permitted from the building until the all clear is received. Hallways are cleared, doors are locked and, in most cases, learning and teaching continues.
- Evacuation - If students are evacuated from a building, they will be taken to a safe location until the building is confirmed safe for return or an early release/pick up is coordinated for families. Location details for an evacuation will not be released publicly for safety reasons and will be based on the situation. Families will be notified directly via email, text and automated calls. Evacuations may be necessary in situations where removal of students is possible and safe.
