October

  • Blackstock Math- Our focus for the year with the new math program is to make sure students have a firm grasp of the fifth grade standards.  In the past the students have been accelerated into sixth grade math while in fifth grade.  This year we are slowing down and making sure the students go deeper into the curriculum.  We are focusing on projects in mathematics and allowing the students to have a firm understanding of the different concepts.  We are pretesting for each chapter, and if the students score an "A" for the chapter they will participate in different enriching activities and real world problem based learning.  Let's have a great year.

Fritz Math- We are working in Ch. 3 with a focus on place value of decimals, as well as, adding and subtracting decimals.  We are pretesting for each chapter, and if the students score an "A" for the chapter they will participate in different enriching activities and real world problem based learning.

Reading- We have fully integrated reading and social studies this year so that social studies is our main area of focus with our non-fiction reading.  In the past we have read non-fiction in reading and it didn't always apply to social studies content, but this year we are incorporating social studies into our reading curriculum.  We are also focusing on projects as a way to allow students to learn at a challenging but comfortable level.  Our goal is to always challenge the students to learn and become active learners for the entire lives.
For our fiction piece, currently the students are reading a novel, either Julie of the Wolves or Old Yeller.  They will complete 2 projects of their choice for our menu to show their comprehension.  This is an area where we are encouraging the students to work to their full potential and put full effort into their work.

Social Studies- We are moving into the world of Native Americans in Ch.2. The students are working on group projects to "teach" the class about the many tribes of Native Americans that were once living across the United States.

Technology- We have been focusing on Google Docs and Typing Web for the first six weeks.  In technology class, our main focus is to make sure the students know how to type using the home keys and without looking at the keyboard.  We also want to make sure they are comfortable searching the internet for information, but more importantly, valid and trustworthy information.

Food Pantry- We are so excited to announce that our fifth grade service project is getting underway as of October 4th.  We are going to be in charge of a food pantry for the school.  We are asking that each student bring in at least one non-perishable food item each month.  The fifth grade students will be in charge of tracking the food and sorting it on a weekly basis.  The project is designed for the whole school to bring in food, and our hope is that we are able to help out families in our own school in times of need.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact Mrs. Fritz, Mr. Blackstock or Mrs. Parks (Intern for Mrs. Cornell.)
