May Newsletter

  • Mr. Blackstock's math- We are continuing the last major project of the fifth grade math class.  The students are finished with the Go Math book and have done very well.  We are creating a 5th grade Common Core math How-To-Book.  The project will go through the middle of May.  While we are working on the books, we will be learning different 6th grade skills to prepare them for what is to come in the middle school next year.

Mrs. Fritz's math-We will spend the remainder of our year wrapping up skills in the areas of measurement, algebra, probability, and data analysis.  We had covered many of these before taking the OAA, but we are going to go back and review.  We will not have any chapter tests, instead we will take short quizzes on the various skills.  Lastly, we will look ahead at sixth grade and  begin working on some skills to prepare them for next year.

Social Studies- Students are learning about our government while studying the Constitution.  They have read through the articles of the Constitution and are going to learn all about the amendments.  They will also learn about the three branches of government as laid out by the Constitution.  Students are working on webquests with a partner and will create a powerpoint slideshow of our nations government.

Science-For the last few weeks of school, students will be performing experiments for the class.  Each student will pick his or her own experiment to perform in front of the class.  It should be a lot of fun, and they will learn a lot about the world around them.

Language Arts- We are going to continue with our root words on a weekly basis until the final week of school.  Spelling lists are also going to continue for the first three weeks of May.  Students are reading a historical fiction novel in reading class; George Washington's Socks or Guns for General Washington.  When students are finished reading, they will work on a project to demonstrate their understanding of the novel and to show their creativity.

    Special Reminders-
-Trip to the middle school on May 19th
-The last day of school is a half day and students will be dismissed at noon
-Lunch forms for the last day of school need to be returned so the cafeteria knows how many lunches to have prepared for the whole school.
