I joined the Polar Bears in 2008 as the 7th grade instructional technology teacher. My teaching career did not begin in Jackson, however.
I graduated from Ohio University in 1999 with an education degree in comprehensive communications. While at university, I took advantage of an amazing opportunity to student teach in Australia. I was student teaching in Brisbane, Queensland when I met my wife Amanda. My life has been an amazing journey since then. Amanda and I have lived in Australia and the United States for the past 10 years. Between 2003 and 2007 we lived permanently in Brisbane, Australia. In 2006 I became naturalized as an Australian citizen, making me officially both American and Australian.
My first permanent teaching position was at Streetsboro High School in Portage County (my alum) where I served as a teacher of journalism, yearbook and desktop publishing during the 2001-02 school year. I moved to Australia in 2003 and worked as an e-learning integration teacher at Good News Lutheran Primary School in Brisbane, Queensland. After returning to the United States in 2007 to be closer to family, I was hired at Jackson Middle School.
In my spare time, I love to travel, hike, cycle, take photos and watch movies. I love animals (especially groundhogs) and all things Australian. Students in my class can expect to have an Australia Day where I tell them all about life Down Under, and I even bring in Vegemite and a didgeridoo. The photo on this page was taken during a visit to Australia Zoo in 1999 when I got to meet the legendary Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter). Because Australians speak a different form of English with lots of colorful slang, I like to teach my students an Aussie word of the day.
In 2008 the Jackson Polar Bear Network did a teacher feature on me for Middle Ground. Follow the link to see the interview.
